THE CLICK HEARD AROUND THE WORLD

Zippo is Bradford’s most famous export.
And now – a legend.
The lighter known all over the world was born right here.

1932.
The Great Depression.
The country is saving every cent and thinking how to survive.
And at exactly this moment, Zippo Manufacturing Company appears in Bradford.
Romance?
No.
Practicality?
Yes.
Founder George Blaisdell looks at an Austrian lighter and thinks:
“Good idea. Poor execution.”
So, what does he do?
• improves the design
• adds a hinge
• makes it work in the wind
And most importantly – gives it a lifetime guarantee.
Bold?
Insane.

1933. The first Zippo lighter is released.
That sound – the “click” – becomes iconic.
It’s not just a sound.
It’s a gesture.
Soldiers in World War II light cigarettes, survive, come home…
…and bring Zippos with them.
Suddenly, Bradford ends up in the pockets of millions of people around the world.
That’s how a small city becomes a global symbol.
And yes – if you own a Zippo, technically, you own a piece of this city.
Today, Bradford has a Zippo Museum – and people really do come from all over the world.
Because history isn’t always palaces.
Sometimes it’s a small metal object that was there during important moments of life.

later in 1950, the Main Street lights up.
The iconic Zippo neon sign –  huge, bright, confident.
It doesn’t just advertise.
It says:
“We are still here. And we shine.”
If you haven’t seen this sign – you haven’t seen Bradford.
