A REFINERY FOR ONE DOLLAR
1997. Bradford Refinery is sold for… $1.
Not a million.
Not a hundred thousand.
One dollar.
Why?
Because $1 wasn’t the real price – it was a handoff of responsibility.
Owning a refinery means taking on big long-term costs: maintenance, regulation, and environmental obligations. Harry R. Halloran Junior accepted that burden to keep the refinery running.
American Refining Group wasn’t purchased for quick profits.
They bought it for:
- jobs
- the city’s economy
- continuation of history
And it’s not just still operating – it’s the longest continuously operating refinery in the United States.
A living part of the present.
This is an example of how sometimes, one dollar decides a city’s fate.
